Shabby Chic Pillows – Envelope Closure

Shabby Chic Pillow – Envelope ClosureENVELOPE CLOSURE PILLOW BACK

This is a simple, ruffled pillow.  The pillow form measures 15″ x 22″ and the ruffle is
2 1/2″ wide and at least 3 times the circumference of the pillow.  It took 1 1/2yards of 44″ wide fabric.  The pillow form is inserted through an envelope opening on the back of the pillow cover.

Measure your pillow form seam to seam.  SQUARE PILLOW174

The construction of the pillow is the same regardless of the size/dimensions of the pillow form.

FOR THIS PILLOW:

CUT ONE PIECE OF FABRIC 15″ X22″  FOR THE PILLOW TOP.

SQUARE PILLOW150CUT TWO PIECES OF FABRIC 15″ X 18″  FOR THE PILLOW BACK:

-At one end of each piece fold 1″, press, then fold again 1″ pressing again.  Stitch along the hem edge at 1″, then again close to the folded edge.  FOLDED EDGE B

OVERLAP FOLDED ENDS-Using the front piece as a guide, lay out the two back pieces, overlapping the 1″ hems at the center until the back measures the same as the front.  Pin the two back pieces together where they overlap and stitch 1/4″ from the seam edge.  Do this along both edges so that the two back pieces become as one.  SQUARE PILLOW169

FROM THE REMAINING MATERIAL CUT PIECES 5″ WIDE THE FULL WIDTH OF THE FABRIC, AND FROM ANY REMAINING WIDTHS OF FABRIC UNTIL YOU HAVE THE NEEDED AMOUNT:        SQUARE PILLOW154

-Sew these pieces together using 1/4″ seam allowance until they are all joined, then sew the two remaining ends together to form a circle. Press the seams open, then fold the entire length in half making it 2 1/2″ wide, and press, wrong sides together.

GATHERING THE RUFFLE.

-Fold the ruffle fabric in half and then in half again and mark each fold.  You should have four marks.  One each will meet the centers of the long and short edges of the pillow top.  This will help to keep the ruffle gathers even around the pillow.

GATHERING ROWS A-There are several ways to gather a ruffle.  My favorite, without using my ruffler attachment, is to sew two lines of stitches the entire length using long stitches, then pulling on the bobbin threads at the same time, gather up the fabric.  At the marks for matching the centers, insert pins, it will be easier to match up the marks with the pillow cover.  Pin the gathered ruffle to the pillow top and baste in place 1/4″ from the edge.

SQUARE PILLOW167Lay the pillow back with wrong side down,  facing the right side of the pillow front, pin all around and sew a 3/8″ seam, taking one or two diagonal stitches at each corner.

Turn the pillow cover right side out and press.

I have found the easiest way to insert the pillow form is to open out one side of the pillow cover.  (After you have turned out the pillow cover to press it, turn one half back inside out).  Insert the pillow form into the pillow cover, fit it in place, then fold out the other half of the pillow cover over the pillow form.

Make any adjustments, fluffing and smoothing, as needed to make it look nice and you’re finished.ENVELOPE CLOSURE PILLOW
